I read an article written from the UCSC paper about the government's recent consideration of apologizing about slavery. ONE argument, made by an African American activist, went something like: "If an apology was made than today's blacks would have more fodder to say 'I'm discriminated against because I'm black,' or 'look what they did to me.' An apology would be more damaging than not apologizing at all." Instead, the activist suggested that today's black society needs to move forward and stop blaming today's society for something that was done by a previous generation and cease acting the victim of something that never happened to them directly. Study history? Yes (including the realization that slavery was legal then), then move forward and understand our young country decided slavery wasn't the best tradition/practice to continue. I believe we need to move forward. We need to deal with what is directly happening to our young people. It is in our hands to do what's right and lead others to do the same. I believe It is in each of our hands.

Something that occurred to me: I am an X'er, I rail against the self-absorbed nonsense I see all around me, and yet...

I have my own website, and blog often, about my own interests. Who is my audience? Who really cares? What am I really contributing to the social fabric?

How narcissistic, and yet it has become-- or at least is becoming-- the norm.

Just a thought.

On one of my many trips to the bathroom while at work yesterday, I thought to myself (a Jack Handy moment) "What if I was on a reality show at this very moment and had a camera crew watching my every move? Would I have something awe inspiring to say about teaching or motherhood?" Then I realized, how very self indulgent of me to think that anyone would really care. Maybe that's just it. So, I am of a generation that is self absorbed, but I am also of a generation who is maturing much later than they were forced to in decades past. Here I am at twenty eight and having my first child, when my father's generation just forty years earlier were getting married in their late teens and early twenties, then starting families close after. We are lucky to have time to find ourselves, but instead we are being called narcissistic.

Do I agree that sixteen year olds deserve over the top parties just for turning sixteen? No way. Give the big bash to a seventy year old who has actually accomplished something (...our life expectancy is no longer thirty peoples!). Although to tell you the truth, I'd love to be able to throw a big party like that for my loved ones. At the very least, some of these kids decide to raise money for charities at these parties. When they look back, I have faith that this act of kindness will be the most wonderful bragging point, and it may inspire more acts just like it to follow.

So, who are we to judge? We live in a home with electricity, and clothes on our back, and food in the fridge. Slavery is still legal in parts of the world, and some people make $2 a day. We could rack up our credit card bills if we wanted, and buy Hummers if we so desired. We choose not to, because we choose to stare the devil right in the face and say no thanks. Can you blame the kid who hides behind his momma's skirt?

Finally, not to drive any point home really, a lot of these young kids DO need some psychological help. They are faced with growing up between split households and feeling guilty about it for some reason, gang violence, terrorism, being raised by the t.v., and getting hooked on instant gratification without knowing what real gratification for hard work and accomplishment feels like. And for those with a drive to secure an income over joining the Peace Corp, then spending their Benjies on Prada, well I show my hair every day, am I wrong?

The narcissist may be in love with herself because someone had to love her. Now she's so prickly on the outside that getting close means being jabbed by her painful shell.

Bush and the Republicans were not protecting us on 9-11, and we aren't a lot safer now. We may be more afraid due to george bush, but are we safer? Being fearful does not necessarily make one safer. Fear can cause people to hide and cower. What do you think? How does that work in a democracy again? How does being more threatening make us more likeable?Isn't the country with
the most weapons the biggest threat to the rest of the world? When one country is the biggest threat to the rest of the world, isn't that likely to be the most hated country?
Are we safer today than we were before?
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!
